Launching New Dimensions of Service
Since 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has implemented programs of service impacting countless lives.
The 2014-2018 International Program will focus on Launching New Dimensions of Service℠. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, through its 265,000 members and 986 chapters, will have an opportunity to address community needs with programs in five target areas:
This target will impact the lives of thousands of students. Alpha Kappa Alpha will support the learning process by providing substantial support to students through the following programs:
~The ASCEND Program will motivate high school students to focus on Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking, and Developmental skills. Students in the ASCEND Program will have the opportunity to receive academic enrichment and life skills training to support their journey to college or vocational school.
~One Million Backpacks - members will donate and distribute one million backpacks and related supplies to students over the four year period.
~THINK HBCU is the national campaign to highlight HBCUs and their contributions to society.
While endorsing personal fitness and healthy lifestyles as forms of treatment and preventative measure, AKA will support organizations that promote health awareness in three areas: Alzheimer's Disease, Stroke, and Mental Illness.
~The Alzheimers Disease and Caregiver Support System will generate awareness and support for programming and research about one of the fastest growing challenges for African Americans.
~The Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness Initiative is our major stroke prevention awareness campaign with emphasis on hypertension management, diet, and exercise.
~Mental Health will be highlighted as members bring attention to mental illness among diverse populations with low utilization of mental health services.
This target is designed to combat critical issues facing many families, including lack of food, shelter, and financial means.
~The Childhood hunger target will be launched with local agencies, food banks, and other community parties to target childhood hunger.
~The Family Seasonal wraps target provides Winter and Fall outerwear through the collection and donation of hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats, sweaters, and other seasonal wraps for families in need.
~The Fiscal Responsibility target encourages partnership with with various organizations and families to help increase the understanding of budgeting, basic financial planning and benefits of home-ownership.
These high impact targets will promote the importance of a healthy environment and improve the quality of life in underserved communities.
~The AKA 1908 Playground Project will be launched to ensure children have safe and inviting places to play. Sorority members will work with communities to restore and renew 1,908 existing community and school playgrounds with its Restore, Refresh and Renew Project
~The Acts of Green Program promotes environmental stability by encouraging recycling, litter prevention and waste management through daily green efforts in local communities.
Programs designated for this target embodies our Service ideal: to make a difference internationally.
~The UNA-USA GLobal Classroom Project is intended to prepare today's youth for an increasingly global and complex society. In partnership with USA-UNA, Sorority members will work to expand the mission and focus of the United Nations. A biennial Intergenerational Model U.N. Conference will be convened.
~In Renewed Partnership with Africare, Alpha Kappa Alpha Chapters will implement youth hunger initiatives on the continent of Africa.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will expand its community presence as a result of these initiatives, which include International Community Impact Days and our signature enrichment program, ASCEND℠.
